EDITORIAN ( Rotarian Editor ) basically meant for Editor’s column, but it’s not always the case. Our column is also open for contributory writing especially for Rotarians which has progressive current ideas and ideals which they like to share to the reading public. As for this particular issue we solicited our ASSOCIATE EDITOR’S view, in the person of Ass. Ed. ROMY DE CASTRO on how he perceived acceptance of Lady Rotarians as active members of our club. WHILE THE IRON IS HOT…

let us strike it. Meaning, let us fan the ember of enthusiasm that PDG MARIANO UN OCAMPO lighted on his speech last 20th of July’s Rotary meeting, that; women or at least a woman be invited to join our Rotary Club.

This is not only fair for the women, it is also beneficial to our club. It provides balance, offers variety, lends color and enriches fellowship.

To have women members of our Club does not only comply with Rotary International precept; it is also rooted in our Christian Theology; that man and woman are created in God’s image and therefore one should not discriminate the other. Nowadays it is no longer surprising to hear Christians saying; "God the Parent" or " God the Mother".

If PDG Ocampo had convinced even just one amongst us to admit women in our own Rotary Club and this piece also another one, then the time will not be long when women Rotarians will not just be visiting our Club, but are active members thereof. Let us wait for the time with joyful anticipation.

SECRETARY’S REPORT
SEC./PP TONY M. YEE

Our Rotary Club of San Fernando (LU), Inc. regular luncheon meeting last Tuesday, July 27, l999 was a good one and our Guest of Honor and Speaker was Past President Vicencia Segui Balajo of the Rotary Club of Baguio (our Grand Mother Club). Her speech focused on the illiteracy of the region.

Our attendance last week was also very impressive. The percentage of our Home Club last week stood at 73 %. – to our fellow Rotarians …keep up the good work!

Last Thursday July 29, 1999, Chairman on Career Guidance PD ERNIE GALERA led a group of 10 Rotarians from the Mother Club for a Career Guidance Seminar at the Lorma High School Gymnasium which was set at 3:00 PM. Our 5 Resource Speakers; Rotarians TANTE LICUDINE, Dir. REX MENDOZA, DIR, RICHARD DY, Dir. ALI MORALES and Rotn. FREDERICK SO did a very good job in encouraging the graduating students from Lorma High School to decide what courses they would take when they graduate. Although it was raining hard that afternoon, nevertheless, the group enjoyed their fellowship with the students especially during the open forum portion of the seminar. The response made by Mrs. Rosita C. Guron, Principal of Lorma High School was very impressive and it was indeed a very successful Career Guidance Seminar. To Rtn. ERNIE GALERA and the 5 Resource Speakers of the club …… CONGRATULATIONS !!!.

TUESDAY THAT WAS
DAVE PARKMAN

The Day Chairman and MC Dir. ALI made sure that all the right people were sitting on the right place. He then asked PRES. ALBERT to ring the big bell to get the meeting started. RTN. HARVEY led us in the Pambansang Awit and it was YOURS TRULY who "filled in" with the Prayer and 4-Way Test.

During the short luncheon, soft background music was provided, via tape player. Good music always help the food to settle better. Actually, a little later in the program we did have some "very live" entertainment from a professional singer, a young lady who did a very good jobs entertaining the Rotarians.

DIR. REX welcomed our guests for the day, mostly from the Rotary Club of Baguio who accompanied our Guest Speaker. The lone birthday celebrant, Rosita Dy, just happened to be both the wife of PP ALDY and the mother of PRES. ALBERT, respectively. So.. we got a double scoop of ice cream from the husband and one from the son. Thanks guys,.. we needed that!

PE/DIR. JEROME’s Fining Session dealt with questions about the RCSFLU’s Club Members. This is a very good way for us to find out things about each other. PE/DIR. JEROME always does a good job with the Fining Session. PRES. ALBERT reported on the damages of the Rotary Service Center, which hopefully, is in the process of being repaired. Since we are still on the "Literacy Month", PRES. ALBERT also reported on the book distribution activities of the Club. There is a need for more books so more can be distributed. AUDITOR ROMY then led us in an Ilocano Song.

It was ADDG/PP VIR who had the privilege of introducing our Guest of Honor and Speaker PP VICENIA ‘VEEH’ BALAJO. PP VEEH is from the Rotary Club of Baguio and is serving as the District Chairman on Club Service for RI District 3790. This being "Literacy Month", her topic was on literacy. She came very well prepared with notes and visual aides. She also presented recommendations on how RCSFLU can help our community. Thank you PP VEEH for taking time out of your busy schedule to be with us.

In his response, PRES. ALBERT reported that our Club is more than in line with the RI District goals and hopefully, we are doing our part to curb literacy in our area. The day’s meeting was adjourned at 2:00 P.M.

DY WEEKLY DIARY
PRES. ALBERT DY

As you all know, our Service Center has suffered a major damage due to the heavy rains for the past few days. Previously, we have also asked the assistance of the Provincial Government for the repair of our service road. I am happy to inform you that they have already started acting on our request. However, it seems that due to heavy rains again for the past few days, more damage can be noted.

Since our secretariat had been displaced from the Service Center, she is now temporarily housed at Hotel Mikka and you can contact her at 242-57-37.

I regret to inform you also that PDG Ces Mendoza who is also our Area Coordinator for La Union for the Vitamin A project will be undergoing a surgery. I am appealing for your prayers for the success of his operation and quick recovery. For the time being, he will not be able to perform some of the arduous tasks he is assigned to do. However, as he has delegated me to become the Acting Area Coordinator for this project, I have already conducted a meeting with the Presidents of the different Rotary Clubs in La Union in preparation for this event.

Last Thursday, July 29,1999, we have started setting our sail in providing career guidance to high school students. I would like to congratulate Committee Chairman Ernie Galera & Director Jerome Gaerlan for the success and well-organized presentation of the different professions to the 3rd year & 4th year high school students of Lorma Special Science High School. A word of praise should not be left unsaid also to the resource speakers who took time in sharing their ideas. They are Rtn. Tante, Dir. Ali, Dir. Rex, and the first timers, Dir. Richard & Rtn. Frederick. Each presenter have discussed on the qualities and character requirement of each profession to give an idea for those who wish to push through on the said professions. A ROUND OF APPLAUSE TO ALL OF YOU!!!

With the success of the first career guidance, we have already scheduled a tentative date with the La Union Cultural Institute on August 20,1999 for our second career guidance.

KEEP TRACK OF ROTARIANS ON THE MOVE

( A Reprint )

If a member of your Club relocates to another community, make sure he or she is not lost to Rotary. Give the member a leave of absence for up to 12 months to make up at clubs in the new community. Your club secretary can send the "Notification of a Rotarian Moving to Your Locality" slip to inform these clubs that a potentially valuable member is moving into their territory. In the same way, follow up on any notices you get from other clubs about Rotarians moving into your club’s territory.

MONITOR YOUR DROPOUT RATE

Why do members leave the club? Based on research, many younger members drop out because they feel an incompatibility and lack of fellowship due to age differences. Many Rotarians also cite time pressure as the major reason for dropping out, claiming that they cannot fulfill the strict weekly attendance requirements.

How can we counteract these problems? Consider simultaneously recruiting several new Rotarians in the same age group. If the new members feel comfortable immediately with each other, they will give themselves more time to develop solid relationships with the club’s older members.

The problem on the member’s inability to fulfill the strict weekly attendance requirements may be valid to some, and this can be magnified if they feel ignored, uninformed, and isolated, giving them justifiable reason to leave. It is then up to each member to make Rotary a more worthwhile experience for more members, where they can spend their time on activities they find most rewarding.

The attendance requirement promotes fellowship since this ensures that they will see each other on a regular basis. This should be stressed to the members. Especially for those who cannot attend the regular weekly meetings, they can be encouraged to make up. This can promote a farther reaching fellowship.

Let us monitor our drop-out rate, know the reason(s), and endeavor to reduce, if not eliminate, this problem.

ROTARIAN IN FOCUS

alan Mcdonald.jpg (12213 bytes)

Alan D. Sy

The name Ronald Mc Donald has certainly been a "yummy" by-word; to kids and adults alike, in San Fernando for two years now. Thanks to the genius in Alan D. Sy who brought to reality the once more delicious advertisement – the Mc Donald’s. Now, I don’t have to drive myself all the way to Pangasinan or up to Baguio to get my favorites Mc Flurry with Oreo and McChicken sandwich or McNuggets.

Even before the conception and birth of the McDonalds's Fast-food here, IPP Ferdie Fernandez and Pres. Albert Dy had been painstakingly encouraging Allan to join the Rotary. He must be a great-real potential for it meant two notable Rotarians to go after him! Levity aside there was no qualms in him. It only took them years to finally convince him that: first,Rotarians are not all oldies; second, he waited for the "right time" that someone from the genuine descendants of Mau Tse Tung was elected president. So the divine time came... and his support was counted. Third, he finally realized that he was already as ripe as the apples of McDonald’s "apple pie" for some community service and other socio-civic activities. Another philanthropist, welcome to the club!

While most would say that they were graduates of the "Universéty of Hard-Knocks" because of life’s trials. This towering 6-ft high, 28 year-old restaurateur claimed that he’s from the eminent "Hamburger University". Not that he didn’t have his own shares of losing but simply because he’s a fancy man for burgers, cheeseburgers especially. He had much of this savory-tasting, calorie-laden burger as he breezed through his course in B.S. Industrial Engineering and Management minor in Mechanical Engineering at the De La Salle University, which is incidentally located very near three burger houses in Taft Avenue. He was born in Manila but spent most of his time in La Union. Count him as Ilocano-by-heart, but not by tongue as he could hardly speak the vernacular.

For the Rotarians, Alan is surely "for here", and not "to go‘. Next order please…
