Since its inception in 1965, the Group
Study Exchange program has provided grants for countless teams of men and
women in the early stages of their business and professional careers to
travel abroad and share vocational information with the representatives of
their respective professions in another country. Team members spend four to
six weeks studying the host country's institutions, economy, and culture,
while observing how their own professions are practiced abroad. More than 500
exchanges between paired Rotary districts occur each year, advancing the
program's ultimate goal of promoting international understanding and
goodwill. Rotary districts select teams comprising four non-Rotarians and one Rotarian leader, engaged in different businesses and professions. Each of |

paired districts sends and receives a team for a four- to six-week study
program. Pairings are usually determined by The Rotary Foundation's trustees
to ensure wide geographical distribution, but exchanges can also be arranged
by the participating districts. While visiting abroad, GSE team members
follow a carefully planned itinerary, including visits to government and
cultural institutions, schools, religious and historic sites and other points
of interest. In addition, each member spends at least five days studying and
observing the practice of his or her profession in the host district. The Foundation grant funds round-trip air transportation for each team member. Rotarians provide lodging in their homes, meals, and |
entity. It is one of the subsidiaries of PNOC, the
government arm in the energy sector. As the name implies, we are engaged in
the business of Coal, particularly in the exploration, mining, marketing and
distribution of this product on a nationwide scale. The government created the company in 1980 to
spearhead the coal industry in the country. Mr. Webster defines COAL as a black, combustible, mineral solid resulting from the partial composition of vegetable matter away from air and under varying degrees of increased temperature and pressure over a period of millions of years. As such, all Coal is found only under |
the
ground where there is an absence of air.
Add a few hundred million years more and the Coal will become
Diamonds. Coal is one of the primary fuels used by
electric generating plants as well as in the production of cement. As part of
the National Coal Logistics System,
the company strategically built coal terminals or depots in Batangas, Cebu,
Iligan and San Fernando City, La Union in which I am assigned. These
terminals undertake the receiving, storage and distribution of the product to
our customers. Coal remains an important source of energy for the country.
Its role in the energy mix is even expected to increase continuously partly
because of the increased capacities of coal-fired generating power plants. The company is also into Coal
Briquettes. We produce briquettes for
households and agro-industrial sector from its manufacturing plant in Bauan,
Batangas. Our household briquettes are
marketed under the brand name “GRILLA.” |

What
Is Rotary To Me? BY PP PAQUITO C. PURUGGANAN |
I got inducted into Rotary by accident.
It was the late PP Sammy Capistrano who was responsible for this. He was
inviting Harry Campbell, Vice-President and Resident Manager of Shipside, Incorporated at that time. When Mr. Campbell begged off. PP Sammy not wanting to be
disappointed, redirected his invitation
to me. With the prodding of Mr.
Campbell who was my boss, I reluctantly accepted the invitation . This proved
to be one of the best decisions I had
ever made in my lifetime. Before getting inducted, I was
indoctrinated by a panel of Rotarians on the Object of Rotary, which is to
encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise,
etc. including the Four-Way Test, which the Rotarians proudly consider the
Rotarian credo. |
PP Paquito C. Purugganan President RCSFU Rotary Year 1989-1990 Theme: “Enjoy
Rotary!” |
In the world of Rotary, one gets to: * Associate
and fellowship with service-oriented people from different walks of life; * Involved
himself in worthy projects focused
toward the upliftment of community and people, and *
Participate in molding the youth to
become leaders and good citizens thru the Rotaract and Interact Clubs,
scholarship programs, manpower training and the likes To sum it
up, Rotary is in itself a package of fellowship, service to people and
community, peace and world understanding. |

Before I became a Rotarian, I looked at
Rotary as nothing but an organization of rich and affluent people who joined Rotary for one primary
reason – status symbol. Of course, all
that had changed when I became a Rotarian myself. |
