PREXY'S NOOK
PRES. JEROME GAERLAN

GUEST SPEAKER
JACOB "Jacky' KAMM

I would like to welcome our Guest of Honor and Speaker, Jacky Kamm, who would discuss a way of harnessing the sun's rays as a source of energy. I know that 'puns' are the lowest form of humor but I guess one would not be out of place here. With environmental concerns now becoming a major issue, the time for solar power has finally 'Kamm'.
The DECS celebrates August as 'Environment' month and so our adopted schools in Barangay Tanqui have undertaken 'clean and green' projects in its observance. For the 'green' part of the celebration, our Club has donated 25 seedlings of Mahogany to the North Central School while for the 'clean' part, we have given 20 used tires to the SPED school which would be used for composting of organic waste. Thanks for IP Richard Dy who donated most of the tires. The school is again requesting for about 30 more tires, which I'm sure our Club members can readily provide. The use of old tires however carries with it a certain risk. That is the accumulation of rain water in its interior which would be ideal for the growth of mosquito larvae, including that of the Aedes Aegypti variety. This is the  carrier of the  Dengue virus, causative agent of a fatal form of hemorrhagic fever.  So as a precaution we should organize a seminar on Dengue fever for teachers of the North Central  and SPED schools and even the other surrounding schools.
Congrats to our bowling team for scoring its 2nd straight victory, this time beating the Kabalikat Radiocom. If our bowlers continue with their winning ways we may again attain our goal of placing among the top 5 teams.
The 'Rota-Brain' quiz contest held at the highest floor of the CAP bldg. on the last day of  August was a great success. Kudos to Rotarian Ray Espinosa who organized the affair.  All the Directors of  Board were there, IP Richard, VP Tante, Rex, Jerry, Jun and IPP Albert. Providing merienda for everyone was McDonald's led by Rotarian Allan Sy. Allan Sy also gave away McDonald's meal cards as consolation prizes. Not to be outdone was PP Canor  Salvador who already gave us a big discount for the use of the CAP conference room but decide to give away an additional  P 1000 as prize money.  Other sponsors were Rex who added pretty Red Cross key-chains to the 'pot' and Ray Espinosa himself, who gave away caps and imported pens as  consolation prizes. Others who were there were PP Ferdinand Fernandez who brought along the needed overhead projector, Asst. Sec. Frank Buenaventura who was emcee and Documenter of the event at the same time, past-VP Arnold Ignacio and Editor-in-Chief Allan Alvarez who was a most amusing Quiz-master. The quote of the evening belongs to him as he tried to pacify the other College teams who were belatedly but heatedly protesting a decision  we earlier made in favor of front-runner DMMMSU. Raising his hands in mock-surrender he said, " Whoa, you want to hit me ! Okay, c'mon hit me ." This did the trick, as angry words were soon replaced by stiffled laughter. Anyway, fans of quiz-contests are not usually the violent sort. I however caution Allan not to try the same stunt in case we make him a referee of a Boxing, Wrestling or even a Basketball match.
September has come and with it the 'rains'. I hope that you are able to keep your spirits high despite the gloomy weather. I have a verse for that:

Strike  a chord within!
Let the melody float
to the heavens.
A vantage point
where the world is seen
as a speck of light
that just tickles the senses.
