PREXY'S NOOK
PRES. JEROME GAERLAN

OUR GUEST SPEAKER
JOSE RAULITO E. PARAS

Greetings to everyone ! Last week was a week of meetings. Aside from our Tuesday Club Meeting, we had a meeting with PP Aldy Dy to discuss our club's Paul Harris raffle, a meeting with PP Andy Astom for the coming club Anniversary , a meeting with the Parents and Teachers Association of the North Central and SPED school to set up an RVC/RCC and a meeting with the UCC Rotaract and Red Cross Youth Organization to plan a series of seminars on Drug Abuse for high school and college students. Some people may think that meetings are poor substitutes for actual activity but surely no one would doubt that implementation without planning is a surefire prescription for failure. Later on, I will be calling Director Jun Tio to discuss the mechanics of our Paul Harris Raffle and also Director Jerry Parlan to brief us on the plans for our upcoming Anniversary Celebration.

Welcome to our Guest of Honor and Speaker, Atty. Jose Raulito Paras. Atty. Paras is a young lawyer from Manila, who will speak to us on the legal aspects of the raging issues of the day. He is , I think well qualified to do this, although still quite young, since he is after all a bar topnotcher. Of course, there are many who take a cynical view of lawyers, no matter how brilliant. We Rotarians abide by the Four-Way test and start out by asking, " Is it the truth ?" Lawyers, with their legalistic frame of mind, tend to ask a different question, " Do you have evidence that it is the truth?" Maybe a youthful lawyer like Atty. Paras can rid us of our cynicism. After all, among the ranks of those barristers who are just starting their practice, an idealistic lawyer is not an oxymoron.

Congratulations to our Club Secretary Diego Ledda for being elected President of the La Union Bankers Association ! I hope Diego with his busy schedule will still have time for us. At any rate, we are fortunate to have a very reliable Asst. Secretary in the person of veteran Rotarian Frank Buenaventura.
We have a lot of projects in store for the tail end of the month of October. This coming Friday, October 27, we will have a seminar on Dengue Fever at around 2 PM at the North Central School for teachers. Sunday, October 29, will be our Balik-Calabugao Medical-Dental Mission. On Monday, Oct.30 we will be having our Career Guidance Seminar at DMMMSU High School. Finally, on Tuesday A.M., Oct. 31, we will be sponsoring an AIDS Seminar for Health Workers at the Municipal Barangay Hall.
Our meeting this coming October 31 will push through, since the day is not a holiday and is unlikely to be proclaimed one. Rotary International just allows us to cancel three meetings in a Rotary Year. We are reserving one cancellation for the meeting close to Christmas, another for the meeting close to New Year and the last one for the one which falls on Holy Week.

Paging again, those Rotarians who will attend the Rotary Foundation Seminar in Baguio. Deadline for Pre-registration is October 31. We will have to make it one day earlier, so we can send payment to RC Baguio South, who will be sponsoring the affair.
