TUESDAY THAT WAS
Rtn. REGGIE CHAN

I never really knew what "jueteng" was until it took center stage from the past weeks and I'm sure by now we all know the situation that surrounds that particular game of chance in the Philippines.  Having watched some of the Jueteng hearings, I couldn't help but conjure up scenes from some of my favorite movies--the Godfather, Scarface and Casino, to name a few.  All this talk of "bagmen" and "point man" and "Jueteng Lord" are quite analogous to mob movies depicted in Hollywood.  But we "are" talking about the government, right?  These are senators, governors and even the president that are the object of scrutiny.  The same individuals we have elected to govern and direct the growth of our country are caught up in, among other things, "plunder"; a crime exponentially more grave than "pilfer."  Can you blame them?  If so many people are willing to throw away P75Million a month (multiplied by 40 area representatives) on a game of chance consistently and on their own free will, then noone should complain where it all goes.  Even if it goes down the tubes.  For those of us who actually work for a living, it might be a good time to reconsider the business we're in.  I saw a sign the other day along Quezon Ave. saying "LOTTO" soon to open…any takers?  - - -   AAA

Last week's regular meeting, led by group 3, started on time when energetic Day Chairman and Master of Ceremonies Sec. Diego Ledda asked Pres. Jerome Gaerlan to call the meeting into order. Rtn. Alex Boado led us with a sincere and humble prayer and Sec. Diego led the Pambansang Awit in behalf of Rtn. Arnel Chanpinco.

While having lunch, Rtn. Alex Boado went around getting bets for the "Roteng" who collected quite a lot perhaps because the prize rose up to P1,500 that week. Many were hoping someone would win that day because according to the Chinese Rotarians Oct. 10 (10-10) was a lucky day. Unfortunately, nobody won. But it was still a lucky day because we were able to raise funds for the club.

PP Cres Fernandez gave a warm welcome and greetings and made special mention the Wedding Anniversary and Birthday celebrants. Thanks, Dir. Jerry Parlan and Rtn. Terry Bugarin for the ice cream.
Friendship Session followed and we had so much fun discovering intriguing infos about great and famous people. Thanks to the great and famous finemaster of the day Rtn. Ruel Tana. Pres. Jerome, who's on a fish -diet then gave his President's report.

PP Tony Yee did an excellent job in introducing our Guest of Honor and Speaker. Surprisingly, he revealed to us that in his 13 years with Rotary, this is his first time to do the task.

Our speaker, Honorable Eufranio "Frany" C. Eriguel, M.D., outstanding Municipal Mayor of Agoo, La Union  shared with us briefly  some of their town's achievements and programs. These included their being  the champion  of  the Cleanest and Greenest Municipality in La Union, made possible by their Dalus Drive Day (DDD) Program where all the townspeople from the highest official to the common person unite in cleaning their surroundings every Friday. He also proudly announced their plan of  opening soon the Agoo Provincial Hospital which he claimed as the most modern and high tech hospital in the region in terms of facilities and equipments. Open forum followed his short talk with questions about the hospitals bed capacity and water supply. PP Dan Bolong gave the appropriate response commending our speaker of his exceptional  zealousness and dedication as a public servant, someone worth emulating.

The fruitful meeting was adjourned at 2:00 p.m.
