Greeting to the Regional Director of Central Bank, Mr. Federico Rentoria. After the revelations of our Guest Speaker last week, Former SEC Chairman Perfecto Yasay, I could not help but be pessimistic about the economic prospects of our country. Dr. Bernardo Villegas, a noted economist , Speaker of the RC of Northern La Union last Friday, was a little more upbeat, but it was still not enough to make me feel good about the country's financial stability, since Dr. Villegas is really known for his optimism. His speech in effect was a plea for the listeners to continue pursuing promising economic alternatives and act as if it really doesn't matter who sits as President of the country. He cites Italy which is an economic power despite its "revolving-door" type of politics. Well, we don't have a "revolving door" here. What we have is a stalemate. We hope our speaker today can tell us that we won't go into recession. That the peso won't go into free-fall. That we will all have a " Merry Christmas and a Happy NewI also wish to remind our club members who are going to attend the Rotary Foundation Seminar at the Baguio Country Club this coming Saturday, November 18, to please give your 450 pesos to Lydia.
At the Rotary Foundation Seminar we are going to donate at least $1000 to the District Rotary Foundation Chairman. This why we are having our Paul Harris Raffle today. We hope that each of our club members shall purchase even just a 600 peso ticket. Who knows you might get lucky.
Yesterday, we had a regular meeting at the Hotel Mikka c/o Director Richard Dy. Most of the loose ends of our Anniversary Celebration next week have already been sewn up. Our Interactors, Rotaractors and Inner Wheel Club members are seriously practicing their entertainment numbers for the affair. Maybe they are hoping our Guest Speaker, 'Kabayan' Noli de Castro would 'discover' them.
Next week we will be having at least a Rotary activity for each day. We have given a letter to the Governor of the province ( who is our member ) requesting that the province declare Nov.19-25, Rotary Week, to highlight the birth of Rotary in our province. If the plans are not finalized before the cut-off of printing of our Gold Leaf, then I will just mention the planned activities for next week during my President's time.
Our Rotary Club, together with the Red Cross Youth Organization and our Rotaract Clubs, have finalized the series of seminars on Drug Addiction, to be held for the students of various schools. I would have the schedule of the seminars printed in our Gold Leaf, if not in this issue, then in the next issue.
For those of you who have not yet filled-up and submitted your "Rota-ography", please do so. Your co-members are dying to get to know you better.
We are also continuing with our weekly fund-raising activities, but we have shifted from our variation of "Jueteng" to a simple raffle to be less controversial.
