PREXY'S NOOK
PRES. JEROME GAERLAN

OUR GUEST SPEAKER
FR. PABLO 'BONG' G. GARAY, JR., SVD

One of the puzzling things which happens when one becomes president of an organization like Rotary, is that suddenly the community invests him with capabilities that he does not possess. Last November 30, during the "battle of the bands" competition, co-sponsored by our group, I was asked to be a judge. The other 'judges' introduced had qualifications for being in the panel, as far as musical training and experience were concerned. I, on the other hand, was just president of Rotary Club SFU, Inc. I turned down the request, despite my whole-hearted support for the project, for the above reason, and also partly because there were 21 bands participating ! Last December 1, I was again asked to be a judge, this time of the Lantern-making contest sponsored by the municipal government. The other judges were an Architect, who of course knew something about design, color-scheme and innovation, and a lawyer, who was also an artist, so he knew something about symmetry and beauty. I on the other hand, was simply pre

Greetings to our Guest of Honor and Speaker Fr. Pablo Garay, SVD. It is but fitting that as our last Guest Speaker for the year 2000, we have a member of the Divine Word Missionaries. Given our confusing times we need to reflect on what the Divine Plan is for ourselves, for our community and for our country. This is, I guess, as close as we can get to having God Himself as our Speaker. But I must caution, Fr. Garay, that although we often give a Speaker a free rein of what to discuss during our Club Meetings, many of our members have strong feelings about all forms of Theocracy ( about religious people meddling in the affairs of the State ). Although for me, priests, deacons, Cardinal Sin, Mike Velarde, and all our religious brethren have the right to participate in our democratic space. I have more objections to Theatocracy - I coined this to describe government run by actors who are merely skilled in the art of theater and make-believe.

Going back to ADG Rey, my column last week, was edited, not I guess by Allan, our Editor-in-Chief, who has complained of being 'edited' himself, but by the guys who do the weekly lay-out of our Gold Leaf. My column last week which was already running to two pages, was simply too long for them. Anyway, I just wanted to thank ADG Rey for the use of his Chateau Wagon on the way to the Downtown Dagupan Induction and back. Despite, the bad roads, I hardly felt the bumps!

Thanks also to our Inner Wheel counterparts who invited us to their Christmas party, last Sunday, held at the residence of IWCPP Carmeling Astom and her hubby PP Andy Astom.

Next Tuesday, we will be having our Club Elections, so please be present to make your choice known. The Tuesday after that we will be holding our Christmas Party. So we need to have our regular Board meeting today to discuss these things and the completion of projects we have earmarked for the year-end.
