Our Guest of Honor and Speaker for today is a familiar face in our club having spoken before us several times in the past. However, I do not mind having him again and again as our guest speaker since he is one of the few who have achieved the happy balance between 'form and substance'. Some speakers are 'all sound and fury signifying nothing' while others load us with useful information but nevertheless put us to sleep. I remember hanging on his every word when he was District Governor during the time of PP Vir Cabading. He would 'wax poetic' but always leave a clear message. I always thought that Ateneans were a pain in the ---. However, PDG Bong Joven has altered my opinion a bit. One other reason why we have PDG Bong Joven here today, aisde from his eloquence, is that he is the District Chairman for Membership and Retention. August is Membership Development Month and we want to make a sales pitch for Membership Growth. I sense a certain hesitation in our club in this regard, hearing comments like "sixty is the manageable number of members for our club" and "Fellowship is more important than membership growth." Well, I agree that these are very sensible observations. I for one, voiced out my apprehensions during the PSETS and the District Assembly regarding what I felt was the undue emphasis the District Leadership was giving to Membership Growth. A District target growth rate of 25% is definitely unfair for large clubs. However, the District Leadership won out with DG Benny Uy pointing to clubs in Japan and old clubs in Metro Manila with a 100 plus membership but with terrific fellowship. Well, we can always try to protest again next year. This year, with 50 points given for each new member and with clubs all over the District having already inducted 8-10 new members, we have no choice but to comply. That is if we still have any desire to be one of the top ten clubs in the District, not to mention being number one. Quality of prospects will be assured by submitting their names first to out Club Chairman for Membership, PP Cres Fernandez, for an informal check prior to approval by the Board and inviting the prospect to our Club meeting.
Kudos to Vocational Service Director IP Richard Dy, Career Development Committee Chair Reggie Chan, all the Resource Speakers and Rotarians who attended the Career Guidance Seminar yesterday, at the La Union Cultural Institute High School. We have another one coming up next Monday, August 14, at the Lorma High School..
This coming Sunday, August 13, the Inner Wheel Club of SFU, is inviting us to join them in their very first regular meeting for this term. This will be held at the 'Cafe Esperanza' from 3-5 P.M. Rotarians whose Anns are not Inner Wheel Club Members and those who are bachelors are invited to attend. We all look forward to the 'clean and wholesome' ( do we have a choice ! ) fellowship we will be having.
