MEL S. CARINGAL

"Here comes the rain again, falling on my head like a tragedy; falling on my head like a new emotion," as the song reverberates over the radio, heavy downpour outside continues... resisting cessation; roaring and mightily sprinkles its stored hydrogen over the country. HELMING was the first "visitor’s" name, followed by a more domesticated one- ISING. "When it rains; it pours." as what these two habitues woulld like to exhibit to our dear motherland. They proved their point...precisely and as splendidly as it was. Remnants of devastating effects conspicuously scattered all over Luzon Region, hitting Pampanga, Tarlac, Pangasinan Provinces and Metro Manila – more severely. While people in the lowlands were busy struggling against the present calamities, residents from the upland; also experiencing the same predicaments. This time its not only waters that are pouring down-but mud and soil, as well. What a disastrous moment we could get from these incidents. Both nature and man-made calamities striking altogether at the same time. Now I believe there’s no really place like.....Home Sweet Home, but, do you think that same adage gustatory to CHERRY HILLS SUBDIVISION HOMEOWNERS? Neither I, don’t think so.

The thing is, man does not learn a lesson, really. Our love for material wealth is always there. We do always put into practice our skill to gain from something that would bring us an edge as dispensed by a material possession. It’s always happening. It’s everywhere, anytime. It definitely took place in the construction of that Antipolo Subdivision. You even heard it from a couple of interviewees featured by ABS-CBN covering situational news in Navotas, Malabon and Caloocan during the heights of heavy downpour when the residents were requested to evacuate. What was their response when their were encouraged to leave? "We have our personal belongings in there, so we can’t leave yet," as one flashed over the interview. "We will leave, if you will set out our belongings, first.", another hastily quips.

I would say am a hypocrite, if I would deny how money or material wealth, for that matter, could spare me from my regular financial obligation, if I just have much of it. That’s actually one of the reasons why we employees, businessmen, executives and the rest of the sectors in the society strive more-to earn more. Not to negate somebody else’s opinion and conviction, we are entitled to it anyways, but, was IT far more essential than your life and somebody else’s lives? There is more in this world that is far more tangible and rudiment, than what our bare eyes could ever "see", isn’t it? Like to know more about it?

TUESDAY THAT WAS
DAVE PARKMAN DAVE PARKMAN

Being the very good Club President that he is, PRES. ALBERT started the day’s meeting at exactly 12:30. It was not until a few minutes later that the Day Chairman and Master of Ceremonies DIR. REX arrived. He was delayed because of the heavy rain and flooding. SEC. TONY was relieved to see DIR. REX come in. SEC. TONY was willing, but not really prepared to be the MC & DC.

It was the " YOUNG ROTARIANS " ( notice I did not say baby - they are getting older and wiser ) who led off the day's program. RTN. FREDERICK led us in the Pambansang Awit and RTN. SAMMY led us in the prayer and 4 - Way Test. Good job guys.

After a good time of fellowship and food, RTN TANTE welcomed the lone visiting Rotarian from Makati ( who actually should be an honorary member of RCSFLU ). We had two birthday celebrants present at the meeting. Each one of them provided a scoop of ice cream for their fellow Rotarians. Thank you PP VIR and PP IVES ( for his wife Rose ). We needed that. EDITOR MEL, who was trying to make amends for misprints in the GOLDLEAF did an outstanding job as the day's Fine Master. He started off by making sure the Rotarians are all sitting on the right seats and finished with questions dealing with Community Service. PP CANOR along with the gang, PP TONY , PP KIT & Asst. Sec. FRANK led us in a good old Rotary Song. PRES. ALBERT is always very well prepared for " His Special Time ". The President always has words of information that we all need to listen to and heed. It was reported that PDG CES will undergo another surgical operation. We are praying for his speedy recovery. ( Oh yes...EDITOR MEL, don't forget to include PRES. ALBERT in the program next time).

We are disappointed that our scheduled Guest of Honor and Speaker could not make it because of the rains and flooding in Pampanga. Maybe some other time. So, IPP FERDINAND introduced the instant speaker of the day. He was none other than our very own DIR REX, who being the MC & DC filled in as the Guest Speaker. Thus setting a good example for the rest of us and with the admonition to be always prepared for anything. DIR REX did a wonderful job as he spoke on the subject of Community Service. He even prepared visual aides to help us see and understand more clearly what he was talking about. Under very trying circumstances DIR REX did a very good job and should be highly commended for his dedication to Rotary and his assigned task.

DIR REX even presented the Club photo album showing various accomplishments of the present administration in the area of Community Service. The amazing thing is that the current administration has only been serving for one month. One can only imagine what the photo album will look like at the end of RY 1999-2000. PP ANDY as always, gave an appropriate response. The meeting was adjourned at 1:55 P.M. and we all went back out to the rain. DY WEEKLY DIARY
PRES. ALBERT DY

I am pleased to inform you that our Club have gone into another milestone by being one of the participating agencies in sponsoring the "OPEN HEART & KIDNEY TRANSPLANT SURGERY" which is ongoing at the Ilocos Training & Regional Medical Center. We have decided to co-sponsor the said undertaking because of its worthy cause to provide new hope, life and chance to our indigent brothers who are afflicted with heart and kidney problems. Moreover, tapping of the services of the best doctors in this field is already in itself a feat, thus, we do not want to miss this opportunity to become part of such a magnanimous event.

Henceforth, our club will also join the La Union Medical Society and the Phil. National Red Cross in launching on August 17,1999, a campaign on SMOKING CESSATION and HEALTH FAIR EXHIBIT to different schools, particularly LUNHS and DMMSU. This is in connection with our ROTA-LUNGS Project. This campaign will serve as an eye opener to the kids/students on two things; ( 1 ) awareness to the hazards smoking can bring with; and ( 2 ) awareness as to who are the advocates of this campaign and general information about these agencies. Moreso, this project aims to develop among the youth the desire to aim for a smoke free environment. Let us join forces with these agencies to minimize, if not totally eradicate this habit/vice among the youth to attain smoke free citizen status.

Gladly, I would like to inform you also that I have attended the launching of the Stimulation and Therapeutic Activity Center, a center specifically designed for the Special Children. These special children are those 0 to 14 years old with disabilities. The purpose of this center is to treat those with treatable disabilities and if not, make use of what they have and to make these children feel their exceptional role in this world by making them productive members of our society. A purpose I strongly adhere to; because I believe that these people/children, if given special attention in terms of treatment, training and education are of equal bearing with their able and capable counterparts. Likewise, since this month is Membership & Extension Month, I am once again appealing to the general membership to improve our status by inviting our friends to join our club, particularly those in the following sectors/classification – manufacturing, banking, professionals, education, hospital, wholesale/retail/distribution, beaches/resorts, telecommunications and accounting.

In addition, our club has endorsed Miss Mary Rose Dela Cruz as one of the applicants for the Group Study Exchange. Incidentally, Miss Dela Cruz is the daughter of our former member PP Florante Dela Cruz.

Lastly, I would like to congratulate PP Cres Fernandez - Chairman for Attendance and Co-Chairman PP Ben Ang for their job well done for attaining a 100 % attendance for the month of July. We look forward in achieving the same attendance for this month and the coming months.

ROTARY INFO
A/SEC. FRANK BUENAVENTURA

IMPROVING ROTARY’S IMAGE IN THE COMMUNITY

It has been said that one of the most effective ways of recruiting new members for the Club is to improve its image in the community. If prospective members view the Rotary Club as a prestigious organization that is highly regarded throughout the community, they will consider it an honor to be invited to join. Of course, this can be a strong motivation for others to decide to join the club. However this should not be the sole consideration in maintaining or improving the Club's image in the community.

The motto of Rotary is " Service Above Self ". This is perfected and finds meaning not within the confines of the Club among its members, but in others, in the community.

Undertaking more projects that make a vital contribution to the community not only improves the image of Rotary; it widens the area and the avenue at which true Rotarians can share the ideals of Rotary. It also provides the opportunity to influence and show others of the principles by which Rotarians live by.

How else can we improve the Club's image in the community? Suggested strategies are establishing good working relationships with the local media - keeping them informed about all the projects, ensuring that all efforts at service projects receive adequate media coverage, sponsoring Rotaract Clubs, Interact Clubs and Rotary Village Corps. Assisting them and actively participating in their worthwhile projects; putting up a publication for the community, like having information brochures about the club, profiles of prominent members, a list of companies that members work for, and others.

Of course, let us not forget the impact of what others see in us as individual members of the Rotary Club - at home, church, at work and in the community where we live. By being good role models as practicing Christians, good family men, humane and efficient leaders, professionals and responsible citizens, each and every Rotarian makes for an improved Club's image in the communit.

ROTARIAN IN FOCUS

JERRY V. PARLAN

Like the OBLATION that stands tall in UP, which is incidentally Jerry’s Alma Mater, he will most likely to tower as a true-blooded Rotarian in no time. Credits to the relentless efforts of PP Cres Fernandez and the skillful enforcement by Pres. Albert Dy who prodded Jerry V. Parlan to join our club. Jerry is a welcome addition, indeed. He has the brilliance and articulateness of a Rotarian. His academic background included elementary at UP, then went to Philippine Science High School and enrolled back at UP to complete an AB Philosophy Course. He could have gone in pursuit of career in Law, had the political climate during the early 80’s, been lucrative to lawyers.

He’s got traits that are certainly admirable- persevering, hardworking and goal-oriented. His amelioration as Operations Manager of LUECO was not effortless. Despite his close association by affinity to the Valero's, who are his first cousins, he chose to be propelled up through efficiency merits. He scaled the heights from a Systems Operator in 1983, then to head the Account Services Department in 1986 and up to his present job. Certainly, he ahs still more to offer.

Thirdly, he’s got a good dedication to any of his undertakings. He would commit himself for the improvement of his club. He can be counted anytime for good causes, but would not hesitate to spell a difference should the sailing gets tough. He has contributed a lot for the La Union Chamber of Commerce and Industry as its Director. With these attributes, he has been lured to join in a number of organizations, but Simba was too slow and meek - that the ever bold and aggressive Ilocano Rotarians of San Fernando got the prize-catch.

Jerry hails from Manila, but has as endearing heart for La Union and its people. He has built a happy home here with his wife Josephine and two kids. He has learned to love extending a hand for community-based programs and other socio-civic activities as he staunchly believes that "Service Above All" should be inculcated to every single individual to be able to prosper as a person. May your thrive propagates!
